Everything I actually use

If I have talked about it in a video, it is on this list, with the take I gave on film and the link to check my words. Shoes get their own full reviews in Shoe picks.

Fuel

KEEP Pure maple syrup

My entire fueling system is maple syrup in soft flasks. 160 grams of carbs an hour at ultra pace, no gut bombs, a fraction of the price of gels.

Kodiak Cakes Power Cakes mix

Two Kodiak Cakes, two servings of maple syrup, whipped cream. 95 to 120 grams of carbs and it has been my go-to before every long run.

Tailwind Nutrition Rebuild Recovery, chocolate

Hot water and Tailwind chocolate protein after hard sessions. Little trick: it literally tastes like hot cocoa.

On film: 07/29 · 07/12

1st Phorm Electrolyte sticks

I absolutely love these because I have one of the highest sweat rates I have ever tested. Match your electrolytes to your sweat, not to the label.

McDonald's Frappe and hotcakes

The best pre-run fuel I know: a frappe is 70 grams of carbs, hotcakes with maple syrup are 100. Not a joke. It works and I do it before big days.

On film: 07/19 · 07/10 · 07/02 · 06/22

The menu, if you must

Coca-Cola Coke at the aid station

Late in an ultra I will take a Coke at an aid station. Sugar plus a little caffeine when everything else stops going down.

Carry

Nathan Sports Zipster Lite waist belt

The only thing I run with. Two pouches, maple syrup flasks in front, and it does not bounce.

Generic Soft flasks, 17 to 30 oz

Type soft flask into Amazon: 17, 25, or 30 ounces, three for ten dollars. They do the same job as the branded ones.

On film: 07/28 · 06/27 · 06/15 · 03/30

Find them on Amazon

Generic 5 oz squeeze bottles

A five-ounce squeeze bottle holds 160 grams an hour of maple syrup. Six for ten dollars on Amazon.

Apparel

Nike Radical Airflow shirt

My favorite shirt I have ever run in, and I am not sponsored by Nike. Would I buy a second one at $150? Probably.

Satisfy Running Running shirts

Honest take: you can feel them getting stuck to your skin and trapping heat on hot days. Not my pick for summer.

On film: 06/10 · 06/07

Satisfy Running

Bandit Running Running shirts

Some of their shirts have scratched up my back on long runs. Your shoulders may differ.

Tracking

COROS Heart rate armband

The average runner does not need an armband, a chest strap, or lactate testing. If you train by zones you actually tested, it earns its place.

Strava Activity tracker

Log the run, then leave the ego inside. Slowing down because of how a pace will look is how easy days stop being easy.

On film: 08/01 · 07/02 · 06/21 · 06/03

Strava

MyFitnessPal Nutrition tracker

Track everything to the ounce and the gram for two weeks before you decide your fueling is fine. It usually is not.

On film: 06/03 · 09/05 · 06/30

MyFitnessPal

Lose It! Calorie tracker

Same job as MyFitnessPal. Pick whichever one you will actually open every day.
